Karate/Self Defense Class
Karate/Self Defense Classes are being offered in Bland's Wagner Gym in Bland on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for ages 6 years to adult. Learn how to protect yourself, get exercise and have self-discipline, call 276-928-0070 and ask for Bradley or Gloria.
Jam Sessions
Jam sessions, sponsored by the Ceres Ruritan Club, will be held every Saturday beginning at 7 p.m. at the Ceres Community Center. All bluegrass musicians are welcome to perform before a live audience. Food, including fully loaded hot dogs, french fries, homemade desserts and drinks, will be sold.
Fibromyalgia Support Group
Efforts are underway to establish a Fibromyalgia Support Group in Hollybrook. There are several people who are very interested. If you would like to join the group, please call Dreama Webb at 276-928-1302 or Martha Bracken at 276-928-1307 for more information.
Dunking Booth For Rent
The Bland County Volunteer Fire Department Relay For Life Team will have the dunking booth for rent again this year for all of your school, church and social events. The fee will be $75 per day. Call 276-688-4205 for more information.
Portrait Fund Drive
The Bland County Rescue Squad Auxiliary is conducting its portrait fund drive. For the next several weeks, families in the service area will be contacted by phone or mail and asked to make a donation. Each family that makes a donation will receive a beautiful 8 x 10 family portrait compliments of the squad auxiliary. Proceeds are going toward purchasing new equipment.
Head Start
The Bland Head Start is now accepting applications for 3- and 4-year-old children for the 2008-2009 school year. If you are interested in sending your child, you can pick up an application at the school or call 688-4495. Screening date for applications is May 5. We are located in front of the Dollar General Store.
Pig Pickin' Time
The Bland County Volunteer Rescue Squad is having a barbecue Saturday, May 10, beginning at 3 p.m. at the squad building. This event is by donations only. Serving will begin at 4 p.m. Bluegrass music will begin at 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Games will cost $1. There will be games for the children starting at 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. for a cost of $1 and also a dunking booth. This event is rain or shine. Bring your lawn chair, enjoy the fun, food and fellowship and help find a cure for cancer.
Squad Auxiliary Meeting
The Bland County Volunteer Rescue Squad Ladies Auxiliary will meet at the squad building on Thursday, May 8, at 6 p.m. New members are needed and welcome.
Veterans Memorial Meeting
There will be a meeting of the Bland County Veterans Memorial at the Hollybrook Community Center on Monday, May 19, at 7 p.m. All interested residents are welcome to attend.
VFW #20 Meeting
The American Legion Post #20 will hold their regular meeting on Tuesday, May 20, at 18:30 hours at the American Legion Building. All members need to attend.
NRA Annual Banquet
Friends of the National Rifle Association will have its ninth annual banquet and auction Saturday, May 31, at the Wytheville Community Center, 333 Community Blvd. in Wytheville. The doors will open at 5 p.m. There are only 240 seats available and the tickets should be bought in advance. Admission is $30 for a single ticket, $50 for couples' tickets for the entry fee and dinner. Sponsor tickets are also available at $225 and up. Proceeds from these events will go to Youth Shooting Sports, Education and Range Development in Southwest Virginia, Eddie Eagle Teaching Programs, Youth Education Summit, NRA Junior Programs, Boy Scouts of America, 4-H Clubs, YMCA Summer Camps, Junior ROTC Programs and USA Olympic Team Members.
